Admittedly I'm late to the party when it comes to the NY politically surged and hard hitting group Stray From The Path. Since that incredible performance at the Roundhouse supporting While She Sleeps, new music was what I needed to affirm or ruin my new relationship with the band and after 'First World Problem Child' the expectations were high. The thought process on how to evolve the sonics of such a small group that produce such a huge sound would be a true test to their integrity.

Kickback produced a massive surprise, with a guitar tone complimenting the bass in a MASSIVE form for a call and response style chorus. Inspired possibly by the technological tweaking of Royal Blood to utilise as much of the sonic soundspace they can with just the two melodic instruments. It's light patter of cymbal at the beginning is only a sweet tease designed to deceive you for when guest feature Brendan Murphy (Counterparts) comes in with his notorious angst and clarity, you're forced to be swallowed up by the extended and much heavier melody. Allowing Murphy's own popular breakdown influence to grab hold of the songs structure, luckily this doesn't get in the way of Stray's signature guitar licks. A definite future favourite "Bullshit" bridges the track and again the enormous tones dominate its eventual and successfully climatic close. The track didn't initially provide much shock value despite its inventive use of resources. However, as my play count has risen, so has my interest in the future of Stray From The Path.
